CHAPTER 04 · INTERACTIVE DESIGN STUDY
Freespace Scaffold
A parametric study in fracture and tension.
Orbit the fractured field, then move across it.
Struts tension, shear and densify where you pass.
00 / THE IDEA
Scaffold as drawing. Drawing as structure.
Imagine a city that refuses to settle: scaffolds bursting from broken fabric, bridges of line and tension, new space claimed inside the break. This note turns that idea into a parametric field, a system of shards and struts that regenerates as you change density, tension and fracture.
Thin ink lines on a dark ground. Move, and the field answers. Local spans pull toward you, shear sideways, and densify into a temporary structure that dissolves when you leave.
WHY THIS FORM
Fracture with a rule set.
A hand drawing is fixed once it is made. Here the scaffold runs on parameters: how many struts, how hard they pull, how far they break from order. One definition yields a family of scaffolds, not a single frozen sketch.
- 01Readable as linework. The scene stays in the language of dense drawings: edges, spans and shards, no heavy solids stealing the eye.
- 02Interaction as construction. Pointer presence writes temporary tension. The scaffold feels assembled in the moment, then returns to rest.
- 03Urban host, freespace guest. Fragmented volumes stand in for damaged fabric. The parametric field bridges and pierces them, claiming space between.
HOW THE FIELD WORKS
Anchors, bridges and shards.
Points are seeded on and above the host volumes. Nearest neighbours form a tight lattice. Longer bridges cross the void. Shard fans spray short rays into freespace. Your pointer acts as an attractor: nearby struts elongate, shear by the fracture setting, and warm accent lines mark the spans under most load.
- 01Density. Raise the strut count and the drawing fills. Lower it and the structure opens into a few decisive spans.
- 02Tension. Controls how strongly presence pulls and stretches the field. High tension makes the scaffold reach.
- 03Fracture. Adds shear and angular break. At zero the lattice stays orderly. At full, lines splinter like a hand-inked rupture.
IN THE CITY
A scaffold that keeps redrawing itself.
Cities are never finished. A parametric freespace scaffold makes that condition visible: structure as a living drawing, rebuilt by movement. Use it as a civic pavilion idea, a gallery installation, or a way to think about repair that adds new life instead of only restoring the old outline.
